About the Artist

“Through my art I express my appreciation of our world.”

Martha is a California artist whose work expresses her appreciation of the natural world and her desire to share the beauty she sees with others. She has enjoyed living in both the southern and northern regions of California and draws inspiration from the abundant beauty of the state.

Her artistic focus is in watercolors, acrylics, inks, and Chinese Brush, specializing in seascapes, landscapes, wildlife, and nature. She appreciates the fluid unpredictability and transparent qualities of watercolor and Chinese ink as well as the vibrant tones and rich textures of acrylics. These mediums allow her to express her artistic vision through her pieces, and her exhibited work has won several awards.

In college, she had the opportunity to deepen her core knowledge of art through the study of art history and theory. She enhanced her formal education with courses in fine art and commercial graphics design, pursuing as many disciplines as she could, while working with a wide range of art tools and mediums.

She continues to expand her artistic knowledge today, perfecting her skills and learning new techniques through professional art courses, workshops, and private lessons. She maintains an ever-increasing library of exceptional art books and publications, and the walls of her 1920s Craftsman home are covered with a collection of art from galleries and acquaintances.

Among her influences are some of the talented and versatile American artists of the 20th century, including Phil Dike (1906-1990), Millard Sheets (1907-1989), Milford Zornes (1908-2008), John Pike (1911-1979), JWS Cox (1911-1982), Dong Kingman (1911-2000), and Rex Brandt (1914-2000). She also follows the work of many current artists and participates in their workshops whenever she can.
